FIRST-DAY-OF-WORK STYLE, IN THE BAG – asos

So you’ve snagged your dream gig and now it’s time to make a stellar first impression. Avoid night-before panic sweats and take notes from these New York Fashion Week style winners, proving that whether you’re heading to a classroom or fashion cupboard, first-day-at-work threads can be a total breeze…

Formal
Just cos your new office is all Wolf of Wall Street, doesn’t mean you have to slack on style. Choose a chic pinstripe suit (with a PJ twist if there’s any dress-code wiggle room). Add a structured leatherLeather is a durable and flexible material created by tanning animal rawhide and skin, often cattle hide. It can be produced at manufacturing scales ranging from cottage industry to heavy industry. cross body, plus don’t forget the skyscraper platforms for a new-season nod – note: closed-toe styles look just as good.

Fashion
No, it won’t be like The Devil Wears Prada, but you do want to smash the style game. Ignore the temptation to do a head-to-toe trend and instead add subtle touches. Swap out your tailored trousers for a cropped number with ruffled hems. Add a choker here, patchwork bag there and finish with statement sunnies.

Arts
Working in a creative field means you can afford to go more casj. Show off your style credentials by mashing up all the textures: a sheer-sleeve tee + a metallic pleated midi + sneaks = perfect for you. Add a hint of fun with a faux-fur cross-body bag and geek-chic up the whole thing with some chunky pastel specs.

Interning
With unpredictable days and potentially gruelling tasks, try this all-black-everything get-up, which is all about the comfy ‘hire me’ vibes. Pair skinnies with a high-neck tee and add a tailored blazer to bring the chicChic, meaning “stylish” or “smart”, is an element of fashion.. Opt for low-heeled sandals (for stamina) and finish with a sleek shoulder bag (for errand-running storage).

Teaching
It’s scary that small humans are being left in your care, but hide the internal panic with an ‘I-got-this’ outfit that ticks all the capable, approachable and appropes boxes. Go for a playful, check-print midi dress and add practi-cool accessories (chunky flat sandals and a satchel) to up the profesh vibe. A+.

ADWOA ABOAH HAS ALL HER SISTERS WITH HER – H&M

H&M’s fall campaign aims to redefine the meaning of being ladylike. As founder of Gurls Talk – a platform for discussing social justice, feminism and gender equality – the British-Ghanaian model Adwoa Aboah is perfectly cast as one of the advert’s main characters. Why? Simply because she refuses to be stereotyped, won’t let anyone control what she can and can’t wear, and is devoted to sisterhood.

The activist and model is a London native, and at age 24 is far from a fresh face in the fashionFashion is a popular style or practice, especially in clothing, footwear, accessories, makeup, body piercing, or furniture. Fashion is a distinctive and often habitual trend in the style in which a person dresses. It is the prevailing styles in behaviour and the newest creations of textile designers. industry. Her mother runs a casting agency and her father works with scouting – so neither Adwoa or her sister Kesewa could have avoided modeling even if they’d wanted to. Adwoa’s career launched eight years ago and she’s been scooping in top-tier campaigns, shows and editorials ever since; her biggest moments include a cover of Vogue Italia and fronting campaigns for Roberto Cavalli, Calvin Klein and H&M.

The freckled beauty has a face like no one else, but doesn’t seem to be too invested in the way she looks or getting validation from it. Adwoa is passionate about supporting the girls and women around her – one of them being her best friend Cara Delevingne. She wants Gurls Talk to be a safe space for girls and women everywhere and is arranging meetings with young girls in schools around Britain to talk openly about the subjects that burden them.

We reached Adwoa over email and had her give us some life (… and beauty and fashion) advice. Swipe or scroll to get to know her better.

LAUREN HUTTON IS STILL HOPEFUL – H&M

When Lauren Hutton looks back on her storied career in fashionFashion is a popular style or practice, especially in clothing, footwear, accessories, makeup, body piercing, or furniture. Fashion is a distinctive and often habitual trend in the style in which a person dresses. It is the prevailing styles in behaviour and the newest creations of textile designers., a phrase that famed lensman Richard Avedon used to bat around sticks out to her.

“It’s ‘the happy accident,’” she remembers. It’s that moment, Hutton explains, when a shot is cropped just so or an expression clicks into place or a woman takes a step forward, limbs akimbo, and all of a sudden everyone is breathless. It’s that split second that turns a mundane moment into a transcendent shot. “It had to be new,” she insists. “We always wanted to create newness, a revolution.”

Hutton has been in pursuit of that kind of work for decades. But now it feels even more essential. “We’re in this critical time,” Hutton explains. An election on the horizon, issues of social justice in the discourse, women in positions of power all over the world—“we have a chance to seize it.”

And the star of fall fashion for H&M isn’t about to stand back and watch from the sidelines. You knew this, of course. But it’s still true: Lauren Hutton is not a wallflower.

WHO SHOWED YOU HOW STRONG A WOMAN COULD BE?
“Diana Vreeland—she was the editor of Vogue. She ran a very beautiful magazine that was accessible to all kinds of people, which is very important. Everyone could see what style and fashion and beauty were—not just in clothes, but in places in the world, in art. She just showed all kinds of beauty and at all kinds of prices. She had a completely original eye. I was 21 when I met her. I was just in awe.”

WHO DEFINES FEMALE POWER FOR YOU?
“The women who are in power! Hillary Clinton, who’s about 400 times more experienced for this job and capable and suitable for this job than anybody else who has ever run. Angela Merkel in Germany. Christine Lagarde, who’s the head of the International Monetary Fund. Women in power in Tanzania, in Africa.”

WHEN WERE YOU LAST MOVED BY SOME CREATIVE EXPRESSION?
“[At the CFDA Awards in June], Tilda Swinton accepted a fashion icon award for David Bowie. She wrote this brilliant, stunning letter to David and she used the pronoun ‘we.’ She certainly expressed a lot of what I felt about him and probably spoke for many of the people in that room. It was really touching and made me cry. She did it without clichés. She just spoke to David, for all of us.”

WHEN’S THE LAST TIME YOU LAUGHED?
“I laugh every day. That’s how I get through every day. I’m trying to think of what the last time was, but I don’t think I remember it. I was probably alone.”
WHEN DID YOU REALIZE YOU WERE BEAUTIFUL?
“It has a shelf life, beauty. And we’re always redefining it. When I was suddenly on covers and saw them when I just walked down the street, I would stand back and look at that and think, ‘Oh, boy! She is awful good-looking, isn’t she?’ And then I’d feel good.

But then maybe the very next day, I’d pass by a mirror and see myself looking ridiculous. Sometimes I feel very handsome and sometimes I feel really ugly, and that’s always been true and probably will always be true. I go back and forth.”

WHERE ARE YOU HAPPIEST?
“Anywhere in bed or the bush. If I’ve been in bed with someone, chances are I was wildly in love. And the bush took me to really wild places. I traveled all over Africa. I was very happy when I lived with hunter-gatherers. It was paradise for me, back to the beginning of who we were. I felt all the time that I was with real people—no facade, no fakeness.”

WHAT ARE YOU MOST COMFORTABLE IN?
“The clothes that have proven the test of time. I like clothes that become old friends, washed a bunch, worn over and over, what I know. But I think that’s true for everyone. You have to know your own proportions, know what looks good on you. And you have to stick to it. You’ve got to find your style, which takes a while. But it happens.

You realize, ‘What do people compliment me in? What colors do I feel good in? What flatters me?’ You have to study that stuff and remember it, but I learned faster than most because that’s what I did every day for so many years. That’s really what it comes down to—finding out what looks good on you, specifically. We all have different proportions. And they keep changing! [Laughs.] You have to stay vigilant!”

WHAT DO YOU NEVER LEAVE HOME WITHOUT?
“My bag, which is the same one I’ve really worn for almost 45 years. It’s a small backpack that I got in Malaysia. It’s made by tribal men, an art-making tribe. Every man makes his own bag. And I’ve got one. I keep the same stuff in it every day: keys, phone, pen, paper, my own makeup that I make—because I make my own makeup—glasses, passport. I never change it. I have one bag, and that’s how I never lose anything.”

WHAT GIVES YOU HOPE?
“That there is a possibility that we will save ourselves at the last minute and find a way to share power between men and women. That’s the way nature intends it. A 50-50 split. We’re heading there, but it takes time. It’s very hard to turn your back on privilege, but I’ve found a lot of smart, young men out there who were raised by smart mothers. So, I’m hopeful. Now we have to wait and see.”

WHAT DO YOU CRAVE?
“Very little. I’ve been very lucky in my life. I’ve gotten almost everything I’ve ever wanted. I crave love, but I have that and continue to have it. So I suppose I want continued love, then. I don’t want that to go away anytime soon. I want to love and be loved. That’s what we all want. That’s what we all need.”

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST VICTORY?
“That’s hard to answer. I don’t even know where to start. I think it would be that I’ve earned my own money and have never gotten it from a man. I certainly didn’t grow up with that idea, but I found my way. And thank God for that.”

(LITERALLY) THE RETURN OF THE MAC – asos

Hear the click-clack of Gucci mules x 1,000? It can only be the start of London Fashion Week. To celebrate, here’s a throwback of the original 90s super, Kate Moss (circa 1995, walking for Karl Lagerfeld), wearing what is, once again, one of this season’s Holy Grail cover-ups…

DRAKE BURNETTE – NOT YOUR STANDARD MODEL – H&M

Drake Burnette’s success is anything but random, but that’s still how she describes it. A few years ago, she was ‘randomly’ discovered in Marfa, Texas by a modeling agent. Her acting debut was something of a happenstance too: not knowing what to do after college, she emailed a friend who worked with director Larry Clark, asking to work as a production assistant in Clark’s next movie, Marfa Girl.
They turned her down – but offered her the lead role instead.

This Texan beauty might have been discovered relatively late (we’re talking modeling years here), but her modeling career has been a success from the get-go. Since her 2013 debut, she has worked with all the prestige brandsA brand (or marque for car model) is a name, term, design, symbol or other feature that distinguishes one seller’s product from those of others.[2] Brands are used in business, marketing, and advertising. “When I was 27 years old and I walked almost 50 shows during the SS14 season. Not only was it an insane experience, but I also like to think that, because I was a decade older than the average model, it broadened the definition of who and what and when a model can be.”

MY MOST MEMORABLE GIG WAS…
“My first shoot for British Vogue with Josh Olins and Lucinda Chambers. I was brand new to modeling and it was the first time that I felt inspired during the process of a photo shoot. It opened my eyes to the potentials of fashion photography. My most memorable show was during FW13 at the Louis Vuitton show, with Marc Jacobs and Katie Grand; I was in the lineup next to Kate Moss and both she and the show were magic.”

THE NEW SKIN-CARE ROUTINE – H&M

DOUBLE-CLEANSING
The bedrock of any skin-care regime is cleansing – not only to remove makeup, but also to better prepare the skin for serums and moisturizers. Which is why double-cleansing makes good sense. Start with oil or balm cleanser to get rid of makeup and excess sebum, and then follow with a water-based cleanser (milk, gel or clay, depending on your needs) to wash away sweat and environmental nasties. The important thing is to apply the first cleanser to dry skin so you literally break down the makeup and sebum before emulsifying with warm water. Rinse, pat dry and immediately go in with the second cleanser. Marvel at your new, smooth canvas.
FACE MASSAGE
Exercise is good for you, right? So working your facial muscles must be, too! And it is – simply massaging your face a few times a week can help with a more defined jawline, brighter complexion, plumper cheeks or de-puffing eyes. Easily slip a massage into your routine with an oil cleanser or your go-to face oil after cleansing. Massage with two fingers in circular motions starting on your forehead, moving outward toward your temples, gently around your eyes a few times, and then downward along the nose, cheeks, jawline and neck. Rinse if you’re cleansing, leave your face oil to absorb if using that. And the best part? It all only takes a few minutes!
DERMAPLANING
Shaving your face is a scary prospect (Won’t the hair grow back thicker?! Short answer: no.), but it turns out that there are benefits – exfoliation, glowing skinSkin is the soft outer covering of vertebrates. Other animal coverings, such as the arthropod exoskeleton have different developmental origin, structure and chemical composition. and smoother makeup application, to name a few. While dermaplaning proper is done by a dermatologist, you can do a stripped-down version at home with just a razor (just not one you’ve already used on your legs). Start at the top of the ear and shave going down to the jawline and in towards the nose to get the whole cheek, jawline, chin and upper lip. Then do the sides of the face by the eyes, followed by the forehead, using downward strokes. Note: very little pressure is needed and make sure to shave only clean, dry skin.

BRONZER 101 – asos

For some, glowing pains are a very real thing – once summer’s over and the post-holiday blues arrive, you’re after something to keep you feeling sun-kissed. So, I searched high and low for the answer to your bronzed-babe prayers and the results are in.

Ready, set, glow
If, like me, you’re a flushed-cheek fanatic, finding the perfect bronzer is high on your beauty agenda. You want something that looks natural but visible, high in pigment but subtle, and, frankly, it’s just not that simple. Here are the holy grail of bronzers – tried and tested!

Bronze ambition
When it comes to NARS’ Laguna, you really are in good company. I’ve fallen in love with the deep colour, which is enough to set cheekbones alight, while subtly adding definition. Plus, you don’t need to use loads so it lasts ages. At risk of sounding dramatic, it’s a life saver.

NARS Bronzing Powders in Laguna, £28

Genius in a bottle
All you Hoola obsessives must be dying to hear about Benefit’s latest liquid venture. The colour is gorge and with the right beauty blender, applying it is super easy. I prefer its powder version, as it’s harder to achieve the same strength with this option, but, on the right skin, it’s a dewy dream.

Benefit Dew The Hoola Liquid Bronzer, £22.50

Sweet cheeks
While it wasn’t my favourite, this theBalm powder can’t be beaten on priceprice is the quantity of payment or compensation given by one party to another in return for goods or services.. It’s an absolute steal for girls with bigger priorities who still want great colour. Warning: apply lightly as the pigment can be a little heavy, but once you’ve applied the rest of your face, it feels right at home.

theBalm Bahama Mama Bronzer Powder, £15

Glow and behold
This multi-tasking sculpting duo can be used together for a shimmery finish, or separately as a bronzer and highlighter. I went for the former and it was a bit too heavy duty for me, but I loved the sparkle it gave my skin. I’d recommend it for glam girls who go to great beauty lengths on a night out.

Illamasqua Bronzing & Contouring Duo, £27

Golden girl
Another success from one of my fave beauty brands (I’m yet to try a NYX product I don’t love), this was a smash hit. Similar in weight and coverage as my home girl Laguna (but a bit more purse-friendly), you’ll get a glow that gives you an Indian-summer vibe way into winter.
