The fashion trend cycle can be fickle. One month, a certain silhouette feels relevant and the next it’s become saturated. And though I’m a firm believer that you should wear whatever you please at all times, I’m also a firm believer in falling in love with a new trend or two along the way. The last few months have procured a handful of fresh trends that while shiny and new, also have a lot of staying power thanks to their versatility. Reworked gold hoop earrings, wide-leg jeans, and a handful of other pieces ahead are worth adding to your shopping list. And for the sake of cleaning out your closet, I also rounded up five trends that may be worth taking to your local Goodwill (provided they aren’t serving you anymore).
Below, five trends I predict won’t last long and seven that I suspect have some real staying power. Discover the trends, shop the picks, you know the drill.
Won’t Last Long: Fancy Flip Flops
Flip flops have received the high-end stamp of approval from brands near and far and while they’ll likely work for this summer, something tells us the idea of a pair of flip flops at a designer price point won’t be in favor for long.
Staying Power: Wide-Leg Jeans
Step aside, skinny jeans it’s time to let a more comfortable denim silhouette take the lead. Wide legs have entered the mainstream and in rises and washes that feel especially flattering and easy to wear.
Won’t Last Long: Pants Tucked Into Boots
If you’ve paid attention to street style in the last six months then you’re already well acquainted with the pants-tucked-into-boots trend. While this look is quite chic, it’s probably so much of a statement that it won’t stick around forever.
Staying Power: Vests
Vests have ebbed and flowed in the trend circuit for centuries plus designers have served up chic iterations in the last couple of seasons that make this layering piece well worth the investment.
Won’t Last Long: Bermuda Shorts
As much as we adore a leather Bermuda short right now, the silhouette is admittedly a tough sell to those who are used to their classic blue jeans and trousers.
Staying Power: Leather Blazers
There’s something so enduringly stylish about a leather blazer. Thankfully, there are plenty of elevated vegan options on the market these days and the piece can transition between seasons seamlessly.
Won’t Last Long: Hair Barettes
Multicolor, oft-bedazzled hair barrettes had their moment in the spotlight but it seems these whimsical accessories are losing steam.
Staying Power: Chunky Gold Hoops
Gold Hoop Earrings
It’s unsurprising that the chunky gold hoop trend has staying power; the jewelry staple goes with everything and instantly brightens up your face.
Won’t Last Long: Padded Headbands
Another hair accessory that may not weather the storm is the padded headband. Though great for a statement party look, it doesn’t feel quite as versatile as its non-cushioned cousin (the regular headband).
Staying Power: Ruching
Ruched details add an artisanal element to whatever piece you find it on—purses, pumps, dresses, and so on. It’s a classic design element that’ll never go out of style.
Staying Power: Quilted Accessories
Similar to ruching, quilted design details give accessories a handmade vibe that always looks sleek. Wear now, wear often.
Staying Power: Croc-Effect
A croc-effect texture always looks more expensive than it is, which is cause enough to add to your wardrobe for many years to come.
There was once a time when off-the-shoulder and one-shoulder tops reigned supreme in the shirting realm. Then, like many items as they travel throughout the trend cycle, they sort of fizzled out in recent seasons in favor of trendy mock-neck styles and the sort. But asymmetrical tops, in particular, are pushing their way towards the sartorial forefront again, and the chicest fashion girls are taking note. There’s nothing passé about this neckline right now.
Yep, when I scrolled through my Saved photos on IG to get some cool outfit ideas, I was delighted to uncover that quite a hefty chunk featured one-shoulder tops styled in a plethora of modern ways. I’m talking neutral bodysuits teamed with wide-leg trousers and cardigans, statement tops with jeans and bold accessories, and everything in-between.
To showcase this newer fashion-person staple even more, I rounded up some of the said ensembles I’m into featuring the asymmetric shirt front and center. And naturally, I also shopped out each inspired look as well if you’re looking to jump back on this trend wagon again.
Team a white bodysuit with trousers and a coordinating cardigan for a trendy vibe. Gold jewelry compliments the look just flawlessly.
A cropped asymmetric top is particularly cool with of-the-moment utility pants.
Elevate a one-shoulder top even more with a slouchy blazer and cool pleated pants.
An outfit featuring a black top paired with balloon-type jeans and strappy sandals is simple yet statement-making.
While the neutral tops are definitely reigning supreme, printed iterations are also having a moment worn with jeans.
Keep it chic and easy with a black asymmetric top, skinny jeans, and loafers.
We at Who What Wear always have our attention focused on the next big thing in the fashion world. Right now, that means the trends that are on the horizon for spring 2020. If the emerging trends on the runways and street style scene are any indication, there is plenty to look forward to in fashion for the coming year. Which pieces are the most essential to begin investing in now, though?
Let me introduce you to our handy S/S 20 capsule wardrobe that details the biggest trends fashion insiders will adopt next year. From the new way to wear leather to the shoes that are about to explode to the jewelry trend that just got a huge upgrade, ahead, discover nine fashion must-buys to get in your closet now. Go on to see how stylish fashion girls are already wearing the pieces now, and shop our edit.
By now, it’s clear that leather looks are a permanent part of the fashion-insider wardrobe, but for spring 2020, we’ll be seeing a transition from neutrals to bold colors such as yellow and purple.
We spotted long, Bermuda-style shorts all over the S/S 20 runways, from Chanel to Staud. Fashion insiders have already been wearing them, but we expect the trend to explode next year.
Anklets have been popular among fashion insiders during past seasons, but now the jewelry has actually become incorporated into shoe styles with cool chain details.
Long, Flowy Dresses
Market editor Judith Jones identified long, flowy dresses as a major trend for 2020. They’ve already taken off in 2019, but there’s no doubt that this will be a defining trend in the coming year.
We saw three-piece suits everywhere on the runways, from Louis Vuitton to Burberry to Marc Jacobs, and whether worn as part of a matching set or styled on their own, vests will be a wardrobe staple this spring.
This matching set will never get old for us.
While there are plenty of jewelry trends on the horizon for 2020, oversize hoops are destined to be the most popular. They make a statement but are easy enough to incorporate into looks from day to night.
Sure, loafers and slide versions exploded a few years ago, but now there’s a new way to wear them. Heeled styles will replace flat versions and become the go-to shoes for the office.
We’ll be seeing a return to the lingerie-inspired elements in clothing across the board, from shape-defining corsets to bustier tops.
In the same vein as the aforementioned lingerie-inspired pieces, bras will come into full focus as tops instead of concealed underneath clothing.
Contrary to popular belief, social distancing actually comes with a whole host of different occasions – whether it’s working from home, your living room gym session or your virtual house party hangout every evening. And, as always, we’re here to style you for each and every one of these scenarios that you’ll undoubtedly be taking part in over the coming weeks. Keep scrolling to discover every wardrobe piece you’ll need…
- For your work from home weekday…
After the novelty of working in your pyjamas wears off, you’re probably going to find yourself craving a relaxed yet professional work-from-home outfit for your day to day. A loose shirt worn with an easy pair of denim jeans will have you feeling as put together and focused as you would in the office. And don’t forget to add some jewellery if you really want to impress on your web conference later.
- For your lunchtime stroll…
Taking a solo walk once a day is a great way to get in your daily exercise and refresh your mind. Plus, it’s also a good excuse to put on a breezy spring outfit! Go for a midi skirt in an uplifting picnic print and keep the rest casual with a cropped tee, a knit layer and a pair of comfy trainers.
- For lounging around the house…
Instead of sticking to solely joggers and baggy T-shirts, elevate your loungewear look by opting for a pair of snakeskin flares in an ultra-stretchy plisse material. For the rest of the outfit, stick to chic neutral tones and add some dainty gold jewellery.
- For your at-home workout…
Nothing will motivate you to smash your at-home gym session quite like a sleek workout outfit so this sleek red set is just what you need. Layer with a cropped T-shirt that you can take off once you get warm and, of course, you’ll need some clean white trainers so you don’t leave marks inside.
- For your virtual house-party…
Whether it’s on Skype, Zoom or our new favourite House Party app, pretty much all the social occasions we’re getting involved in right now are via web chat. All you’ll need here is a few cute top and earring combinations – you can wear absolutely anything on the bottom (read: joggers), no one will ever know!
- For your garden sun tanning…
We might not be jetting off to our favourite sun-soaked destinations for a while, but don’t let that stop you from bringing the Mediterranean vibes to your own back garden. Treat yourself to a blue and white porcelain patterned bikini – which you can take on holiday with you later – and if it’s not quite hot enough for tanning yet, cover up with some white shorts and a cropped polo.
- For your good night’s sleep…
And finally, bed time. To give this outfit a different feel from your lounge wear look, make sure to go for a chic matching set in a calming mustard and light blue floral print. If you want to feel especially extra, throw a coordinated robe on top and slip into some soft new socks for warmth.
Now you know what to wear, check out all these fun things you could be doing indoors…
While skinny jeans will never actually be out of style, there are a range of fresh, non-skinny silhouettes that continue to rise in popularity. Yep, we’re talking about styles like flared denim but also a recent favorite amongst the fashion and celeb world: full-length denim. This cut is in a straight fit, typically comes in a lighter wash, and bunches just slightly on top of the shoes. You may remember Hailey Bieber’s recent ensemble last month featuring the Khaite full-length jeans.
Sure, this silhouette is a far cry from the cropped skinny and straight jeans that we’ve been wearing over the last few seasons, but this is one denim style that will be that forward spin to any outfit in the 2020s. We bet the chicest people out there will give these jeans a whirl with pointed ankle boots now or low-heel strappy sandals when the temperatures start to warm up. To highlight this must-try denim trend further, we rounded up how fashion people are wearing full-length jeans now and how they turned up on the S/S 20 runways. Keep scrolling for more and to shop a few pairs as well.

Okay, if we’re being honest, we would have never predicted that scrunchies would be the trend to lead the ’80s back into this millennium. After all, there are so many iconic trends from the decade of electro music and permed hair. Alas, such was not the case. Instead, the fabric hair accessory—which now comes in a variety of styles, prints, and textures—has dominated as one of the must-have items in recent years, making the case for investing in hair accouterments as a whole.
Whether you’ve already embraced the scrunchie movement with open arms or you’re just now swapping out your elastic hair ties for the gentler alternative, there’s no doubt that you deserve to have the best scrunchies in your arsenal of haircare—which is why we pulled them all together in one place.
Ahead, you’ll find the coolest scrunchie trends that we won’t stop wearing. Scroll down to see them all, and then add your favorites to your cart along the way.
If you’re at a loss for what type of scrunchie you want to add into your collection of hair accessories, start with a classic black style. Whether it’s a cool leather version or something that feels more whimsical like a silk organza option, there’s no going wrong here.
Scrunchies are no new trend to the scene, but it’s large, overexaggerated styles that have been catching the attention of fashion girls everywhere. Wear one of these billowing styles to make a chic statement.
If you’re going to incorporate scrunchies into your everyday hairstyles, why not take it back to the time when they were the It accessory? Go for retro prints and colors or opt for old-school textures, like patent leather.
For those of you who want to give your hair game a luxurious touch, you won’t regret wearing an elevated silk scrunchie, which will instantly dress up your hair.
Could there be anything more classic than a velvet scrunchie? Whether it comes with a sweet bow or a cool embellishment, this particular style is one that every fashion girl should own.
With spring finally on its way, we’re already dreaming of ditching our coats and swapping them for all the best summer classics: think warm nights in strappy dresses, picnics wearing flowy skirts and walks along the beach in open-toe sandals. In fact, all of those styles are actually already available to shop right now and some of the best summer styles of the season drop early on – so don’t miss out. Browse the best new arrivals now and start curating your perfect summer wardrobe to be ready as soon as the sun comes out…

If you grew up or spent any amount of time as a consciously thinking human in the ’80s, this microtrend is about to give you all the feels—as in, all the nostalgia—good or bad. Just like the other trends reemerging from the decade right now, such as puffy sleeves and neon brights, this one is bound to be polarizing. Ready or not, metallic clothing is on the rise.
While you may have reserved your shiniest, sparkliest pieces for nights out or New Year’s Eve, it’s time to embrace your inner disco girl for all hours of the day, too. If metallic clothing seems intimidating to you, fret not. The easiest way to embrace all that glitters is by balancing it out with clean neutrals and solid-colored basics. Try out a pair of pink metallic mules with your everyday jeans or ground a party dress with neutral heels. Get inspired by how fashion girls are reclaiming the trend in 2020, and then shop some suggestions to get you started.
Go for metallic versions of the pieces you already know and love, like a structured blazer.

Everyone knows that accessories can make or break an outfit, so it’s always important to pick finishing touches that give everything you wear personality. First up: the square-toe mule. Nylon bags are also here to stay, so look to new prints like gingham, ruched materials and hardware details to give them a refresh for 2020.
