H&M – Interview with Maria van Nguyen

”I admire people that select carefully, put quality over quantity, and have a small wardrobe with pieces they wear over and over. They don’t follow trends but instead their clothing is a reflection of their personality. Style should come naturally and it is most beautiful when it is effortless and easy.”WHAT IS YOUR SIGNATURE STYLE?

”Elegant but cool. The most important thing for me is to dress comfortably, which is why I prefer a loose silhouette. I like clothing to be versatile and practical.”IF YOU HAD TO LEAVE YOUR APARTMENT IN A HURRY, WHAT WOULD YOU GRAB?

”Well, that’s practically me every morning. I grab a pair of sneakers and my mp3-player, filled with sexy RnB and hip-hop.WHAT IS YOUR GO-TO LOOK?

”Sneakers, wide trousers, a loose t-shirt. All in a white/black/grey colour palette.”WHO IS YOUR FAVOURITE DESIGNER?

”Christophe Lemaire and Sarah-Linh Tran for their practical clothing, philosophy and values when it comes to design. Then there’s Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen (The Row) for their subtle but luxurious pieces in the highest quality and amazing choice of materials. I always appreciate designers that are creative but still find the right balance of making actual wearable clothing.”WHY IS FASHION IMPORTANT?

ClothingClothing is fiber and textile material worn on the body. The wearing of clothing is a feature of nearly all human societies. The amount and type of clothing worn is dependent on physical stature, gender, as well as social and geographic considerations. is important because it’s intimate. It adds to our feelings and personality, and it’s a way for us to communicate and connect with other people. As a fashion designer I also think clothing is important to make our lives easier. My goal is to highlight the basics and essentials in order to create a small and ideal wardrobe that lasts for years, which allows you to spend more time and energy to focus on other things in life.”

The Story behind white T-shirt from H&M

The jeans and T-shirt combination is a timeless look mastered by the eternal style icon James Dean. Read on for a history lesson on the most popular fashion item of all.

Between the final years of the 1800s and the early 1900s, the T-shirt was invented. It’s believed to have evolved from a flannel one-piece called the union suit, which was common men’s underwear during the 1800s. The one-piece was great for keeping its wearer warm but hopeless for cooling him down – so it was replaced by the T-shirt out of necessity.Until the middle of the 1900s, the figure-hugging T-shirt was never worn as anything else than underwear, and wearing it without a second layer on top was frowned upon. That changed in two steps: When troops returned from the Second World War it became accepted as casual wear, and in 1951 it reached fashion status thanks to Marlon Brando sporting a tight one in cult classic A Streetcar Named Desire. With James Dean’s leading role in Rebel Without a Cause, the trend exploded – and it hasn’t faded since. Wearing a T-shirt with rolled up sleeves, semi-tucked into a pair of blue jeans became an iconic and timeless look.

After its promotion from underwear to fashion item, the T-shirt arguably became the most popular garment of them all – for so many reasons.
