A Review Of H&M Online

We’re sure you’ve heard by now that Swedish fast-fashion behemoth H&M finally launched its long-awaited e-commerce site yesterday following what felt like an endless stream of start-and-stop rumors.

Naturally, since online shopping is an area in which we’re proudly adept, we immediately took to HM.com to see whether we’ll be bookmarking the site—or whether we’ll stick to shopping in the store’s several brick-and-mortar locations.

Read on for our general assessment!

Ease of use:

Overall, the site’s not difficult to navigate but it’s not terribly sleek. For real-deal shoppers, it probably won’t be a problem, but if you’re looking for a simple, beautiful interface, this isn’t it.

The merch:

The women’s selection is fairly limited and appears to be mostly basics, with a few trendy items thrown in the mix. We assume the site wants to compete with Zara—which is killing it in every way, shape, and form when it comes to e-commerce—so it’s surprising that the “better” stuff isn’t available online. H&M will sell its buzzy collaboration with cool-girl French designer Isabel Marant online in November, so perhaps the Trend line will follow? We’re hoping it does!.

H&M announced Thursday that Katy Perry will be the face of its 2015 holiday campaign, replacing Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett who fronted the seasonal advertisements last year.
The full campaign has not been released yet, but we do have one image and introductory video from the singer to tide us over, the latter featuring Perry in a sharp tuxedo topped with a bright red bow and red nail polish. But if the singer’s penchant for wacky costumes is any indication, the holiday campaign should see her decked out in plenty of red and green garb — and maybe even makeup from H&M’s soon-to-be-released beauty line?
Stay tuned for more.

H&M Founder

Erling Persson was the founder of H&M (Hennes&Mauritz). He got the idea following a post-WWII trip to the United States as he was very impressed by efficient, high-volume stores.
The company was in 1947 by Erling Persson, though at the time it only sold women’s clothing and was called Hennes, Swedish for “hers.” In 1968, Persson acquired the premises and inventory of a Stockholm hunting equipment store named Mauritz Widforss. In 1982, Erling Persson’s son, Stefan Persson took over the position as the Managing Director, and today he is the Chairman of the Board. The Persson family owns about 33% of the company and has a 69% voting right.

HM Comeback Clothes Campaign

You probably have some old clothes lying around that are in no condition to donate or sell. If you’re an H&M shopper, you could use those clothes to score a 20 percent discount until the end of May.
H&M recently launched HM Comeback Clothes campaign with DoSomething.org. Bring in your used, old, ripped, or stained clothes, and they’ll take them to a recycling facility so the fabric can be reused. The idea is to reduce waste and promote sustainability. And, yep, you’ll get a 20 percent discount for your donation.
We’ve talked about H&M’s Long Live Fashion campaign. Comeback Clothes is similar. The latter offers a bigger discount, although it’ll only run from today until May 31st. (Long Live Fashion offers a 15 percent discount, but it’s ongoing.)
Last year’s campaign recycled over 340,000 pounds of clothing, according to DoSomething.org. All you have to do is bring your clothes into the store, and you’ll get the 20 percent off coupon. If you like H&M and you’ve got some stuff to get rid of, it could be worth the trip.
