PRETTY IN PRINT–H&M

Sophia Roe is a chef and wellness expert by day, and beautyBeauty is a characteristic of an animal, idea, object, person or place that provides a perceptual experience of pleasure or satisfaction. Beauty is studied as part of aesthetics, culture, social psychology, philosophy and sociology. advocate and empowerment architect by night. After working 18-hour shifts in restaurants, having tight schedules and – hardly – keeping up any routines for eating, sleeping and exercising, the 29-year-old got her wellness wake-up call nearly a decade ago.

“I don’t work for New York anymore, New York works for me now,” she says about giving up the fast-paced and stress-induced lifestyle that dictated her past life.

After battling with the extremes – cutting meat, dairy and gluten – she has figured out what really works when it comes to feeling good all the time.

“It’s all about balance – of course!” she preaches. “I only ate fruit and drank water during a period, which wasn’t great. You need to try new diets and new routines for ten-day periods in order to find what works for you. You can still have doughnuts, cheese and wine, but not every day.”

Dressed in the fluid, voluminous and colorful pieces from H&MHennes & Mauritz AB is a Swedish multinational clothing-retail company known for its fast-fashion clothing for men, women, teenagers and children. H&M and its associated companies operate in 62 countries with over 4,500 stores and as of 2015 employed around 132,000 people. It is the second-largest global clothing retailer, just behind Spain-based Inditex (parent company of Zara). The company has a significant on-line presence, with on-line shopping available in 33 countries.‘s latest print collab with iconic British interior brand GP & J Baker, Sophia Roe tells all about clean eating, positive thinking and wearing clothing that gives you confidence.

WHAT GOT YOU INTERESTED IN WELLNESS?
“I wasn’t taking care of myself for a really long time and it made me very sick. I was normalizing chronic pain, chronic headaches and chronic bronchitis, and worked long shifts without keeping any routines. For months I felt like I was always holding my breath. At the same time, people started getting into juicing and fasting, which I felt I wanted to investigate. Being a chef, I wanted to find a way to make wellness taste good and be enjoyable.”

WHAT DO YOU EAT?
“I start my day with a cup of Earl Grey tea. Then, a few hours later, I eat something with fruit – be it grapefruit, a smoothie or a fruit bowl. For lunch I have a massive salad, I eat the same one every day: loads of mixed greens and veggies, black beans and some sort of grain. For a mid-day snack, I usually have some more fruit or just vegetables with hummus. For dinner I usually do a stir-fry of different veggies. And, I’m not going to lie, it does happen that I have red wine or tequila with friends afterwards!”

IF YOU COULD ONLY EAT ONE MEAL FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
“Ceviche tacos. Yum! I want to eat that every day!”

WHAT WOULD YOU NEVER EAT?
“I would never eat any processed sugar. Cakes, pies and sweets don’t even sound good to me. I’d never eat cheese or any land animals either.”

YOU’RE ALWAYS WEARING COLORFUL AND PRINTED CLOTHING. SHOULD FASHION ALWAYS BE FUN?
“It shouldn’t always be fun, but it should always be you – and it should always feel fun to get dressed. I don’t know why I love colors and prints so much, it’s just what makes me feel sexy, pretty and comfortable. Prints make me feel like myself, and that’s the most important thing about fashion. I don’t want to feel like I’m walking down the street in my Lady Gaga outfitsClothing can be made of textiles, animal skin, or other thin sheets of materials put together. The wearing of clothing is mostly restricted to human beings and is a feature of nearly all human societies. The amount and type of clothing worn depend on body type, social, and geographic considerations. Some clothing can be gender-specific. – I want to feel like I’m walking down the street in my Sophia outfit.”

WHAT’S YOUR FIRST IMPRESSION OF THE GP & J BAKER COLLECTION?
“I love how all the pieces come together. It’s like you put on three different records at the same time and they all sound good together. That’s how I want to feel about my outfit all the time. Everything is so cohesive.”

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE PIECE?
“The jumpsuit! I love anything that’s so comfortable that I can just throw it on, and comfort and style are definitely closely related. It’s so easy to make a jumpsuit elegant – adding a headscarf, earrings, shoes. It’s a challenge style-wise and I think that’s really fun.”

DOES WHAT WE WEAR AFFECT HOW WE FEEL?
“Are you kidding me? Of course it does! When I’m walking out of the house wearing the right outfit, I feel invincible. It’s just like having great skin or great hair – it gives you confidence. And confidence is the best thing you can wear. A really crappy outfit will make you feel crappy.”

TELL US ABOUT YOUR HAIR ROUTINE!
“New York is really hot in the summer, so I like to put my hair up in a braid to save it from the heat and sun. I only wash it once a week and always deep-condition it. I have extremely curly hair and it’s long, so it gets really dry, which can cause breakage if it’s not properly moisturized. I also run a little sunscreen through it to keep it from getting bleached.”

ANY SECRETS OR HACKS?
“Don’t use any products with silicone in them! It creates a barrier that doesn’t let moisture in. A lot of products have that, so read your labels carefully!”

WHAT ABOUT SKINCARE AND MAKEUP?
“I do think argan oil is the key to gorgeous skin. It’s the one thing that I’ve been using constantly for five years and I give it so much credit. I can’t say enough good things about it! Other than that I keep my makeup very minimal and never use any products with silicone on my face either. I stay away from coconut oil too because it makes my skin break out. I’m very conscious about sunscreen and have bottles of it everywhere, and I wear it all year round. Even though I’m dark – I’m Brazilian-Japanese – I always get burned in the sun.”

SOPHIA’S 5 TIPS FOR A HEALTHY AND POSITIVE LIFE

1. HANDLE YOUR STRESS
“Stress is what causes us to do all the rash things we do in life. Unfortunately, there are no one-way solutions to handle it and everyone needs to develop their own practices. For me, getting my feelings down on paper is a great reliever. To write letters and not send them.”

2. DEVELOP A ROUTINE
“We all get bombarded with different stuff: ‘I’m vegan and you should be too,’ or ‘I go running every morning and so should you.’ You may need to try an array of different practices to find what makes you feel good. Give everything a 10-day trial!”

3. EXERCISE
“You have to move your body every single day, that’s non-negotiable. Dance, hit the gym, go for runs, or do whatever you like. You just need to move!”

4. EAT CONSCIOUSLY
“If you want to eat doughuts every day you’ll end up looking like a doughnut! I’m not telling anyone to not eat meat or not eat sugar, I’m just telling people to be conscious about it. Sure, eat that doughnut, but don’t eat it every day.”

5. LOOK AT YOUR HAPPINESS
“Sit down and ask yourself ‘Am I happy?’; ‘Do I like my job?’; ‘Do I like my boyfriend?’; ‘My friends?’ Think about it and be honest with yourself, because if you can’t be honest with yourself, who the h*ll are you going to be honest with? Remind yourself of all the things that make you happy and soon it’ll be like breathing.”

When life gives you a lake, slip into 80s-inspired swimwearSwimwear is clothing designed to be worn by people engaging in a water-based activity or water sports, such as swimming, diving and surfing, or sun-orientated activities, such as sun bathing. Different types may be worn by men, women, and children. Breathtaking views, perfectly trimmed cypress trees and low clouds hugging majestic emerald-green mountains. It’s hard, impossible actually, not to fall in love with Lake Como. The famous enclave lies just an hour north of Milan, but feels worlds away from the hustle and bustle of the north Italian metropolis. In the scenic and picturesque lakeside town of Varenna, you feel invited to ponder about the big things in life, a pondering that comes to an early end when The Summer Express rolls into town with Nuria Val and Andrea and Paolo Faccio on board.

“We love to travel and discover the world,” Nuria says about their shared passions: “I’m so impressed by Lake Como, I didn’t expect it to be this big and wild,” she continues.

Here to live La Dolce Vita, the Venice-born and Milan-based influencers have brought Nuria along to celebrate summer the Italian way: with early-morning macchiatos, lunch in the pergola, afternoon boat rides and taking in the views from every angle.

The 24-year-old twins were born three minutes apart, share wardrobesA wardrobe is a standing closet used for storing clothes. The earliest wardrobe was a chest, and it was not until some degree of luxury was attained in regal palaces and the castles of powerful nobles that separate accommodation was provided for the apparel of the great. The name of wardrobe was then given to a room in which the wall-space was filled with closets and lockers, the drawer being a comparatively modern invention. From these cupboards and lockers the modern wardrobe, with its hanging spaces, sliding shelves and drawers, evolved slowly., are (basically) identical, and work with the same things.

ANDREA: “If it’s on the menu, I’m never able to resist carpaccio, especially with a little parmesan on top!”

ELLIE AND NURIA ARE RIVIERA-READY–H&M

Exactly halfway between Paris and Rome lies Menton. A coastal town that is so captivating that generations of royals and nobles – including Queen Victoria, Winston Churchill and the princes of Monaco – have spent time in the little village that hides behind the Maritime Alps and is embedded among lush botanical gardens, lemon tree plantations and picturesque pastel houses.

Ellie, the style maven behind Slipintostyle, grew up in Martinique but moved to the south of France at 20. After four years on the glittering stretch of coastline, she relocated to Paris, but still makes her way down south whenever she gets a chance.

“There’s a very special atmosphere down here that’s different from anywhere else in France. The people are so hospitable, and there’s an air of mid-century glamour that creates a pretty unique lifestyle. Film classics like Bonjour Tristesse, To Catch a Thief and La Piscine still convey a pretty accurate picture of what the Riviera is like.”

When the word style slips into question, Ellie lights up even more. A self-proclaimed shoe and mini-bag aficionado, she launched her inspirational account just over a year ago and has gained both followers and made fashion friends since. One of them is photographer, creative director and style icon Nuria Val.

“I got into fashion very early on. It all started with me always observing how my mother got ready for work in the 90s and 00s, how elegant and chic she was. She’s still my fashionFashion is a popular style or practice, especially in clothing, footwear, accessories, makeup, body piercing, or furniture. Fashion is a distinctive and often habitual trend in the style in which a person dresses. It is the prevailing styles in behaviour and the newest creations of textile designers. icon,” Ellie says and continues: “Coming from the Caribbean, I’ve always been really into bright colors, big prints, and mixing and matching things together.”

With Nuria fresh in from Barcelona, the Mediterranean is calling.

For a perfect summerSummer is the hottest of the four temperate seasons, falling between spring and autumn. At the summer solstice, the days are longest and the nights are shortest, with day-length decreasing as the season progresses after the solstice. The date of the beginning of summer varies according to climate, tradition and culture, but when it is summer in the Northern Hemisphere, it is winter in the Southern Hemisphere, and vice versa. day, Nuria and Ellie keep their packing lists short and sweet: fruit, sunglasses, ice cream, kaftans, playing cards and – of course – swimsuits, bikinis, and some more swimsuits.

“I usually just bring a friend, some fruit and my favorite music. Then we eat and talk and sunbathe all day long. It’s perfect,” Ellie says.

The two have a lot of things in common, but their love of nature might be their biggest shared passion – drawing inspiration from it in all they do. Further proof of this is the fact that they both concur that summer styleStyle is a manner of doing or presenting things, especially a fashionable one. is just a different term for always wearing bikinis or swimsuits underneath any outfit to be ready to plunge in at any given time. Function is always the most important thing when it comes to beachwear.

“All my inspiration and motivation come from nature. Wherever I travel, my goal is always to find something different and something beautiful,” Nuria says as she stares at the sea wearing a one-shoulder bikini paired with a crisp cotton shirt.

There’s more to the Côte d’Azur than fast sports cars, massive yachts and luxury beach clubs. Ellie shares her top spots to travel to – and things to get your hands on – when you’re rolling on the Riviera.

MENTON
“Menton is my favorite summer getaway, and a hidden gem on the Riviera. With long pebble stone beaches, hidden cliffs and delicious French and Italian food everywhere, it’s a must-go if you’re on the coast.”

LE NEGRESCO
“La Belle Époque is still alive and well at Hotel Negresco. It’s a landmark in Nice and its restaurant, Le Chantecler, serves scrumptious French food and invites to some of the most interesting people-watching there is.”

LA PROMENADE DES ANGLAIS
“Beautiful views, fantastic food and cute little shops that hold everything you need. I collect magnets wherever I travel to stick on my fridge at home. The souvenir store supply seems endless on Nice’s most famous promenade.”

STRIKING OIL
“You can buy good olive oils at the supermarket, sure, but you’ll taste the best olive oil in the world on the Côte d’Azur. Every little town has an array of local shops that cater to all your cravings.”

THE RIVIERA LOOK
Nothing says Riviera quite like a long, printed skirt paired with a cropped crochet top. And few do it better than Ellie, whose Caribbean cool matches the coast perfectly. Nuria, true to her own laid-back summer style, gives a girly straight-cut cotton dress a cool twist by pairing it with her signature straw bag, a pair of edgy slippers and one of summer’s trendiest sunglass models.

Describe the perfect summer look!

“The perfect Riviera look should be easy and breezy. I prefer things that are easy to get in and out of. Dresses, sandals, T-shirts and cute tops. I love crochet, and since it’s something that’s hard to wear in the cold months, I sometimes overdo it in the summer,” Ellie says.

Cue the pizza, pasta, gelato, the espresso breaks and peach-picking sessions – cue the endless views! Nuria is heading east, to Italy where she’ll explore Lake Como with dreamboats Andrea and Paolo Faccio. See you when she gets there. Till then – ciao!
