Mango Adds Scan-and-shop To Mobile App

Spanish fashion chain Mango has added a scan-and-shop feature to its iOS app in a bid to build on mobile sales, which it says now accounts for 30% of its online activity globally – up 10% on last year.

Mango has an online presence in in 64 countries and plans to increase this into Australia and several central and south American countries, as well expanding into new markets in Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

In 2013, the company’s online sales totalled €124m (£97m), accounting for 6.7% of turnover; up 77% on 2012.

In 1984 Mango opened its first shop on the Paseo de Gracia (Barcelona). A year later, the company had five outlets in Barcelona and from this point on, with the opening of a shop in Valencia; it began its expansion in the domestic market. What was initially a small team had begun to grow: by 1988, the company had 13 sales outlets in Spain.

In 1992, the company took its first steps outside the domestic market with the inauguration of two stores in Portugal. The following year, the company opened its 100th store in Spain and, two years later, the business management system, based on specialized and co-ordinate teams, was successfully introduced – and is still in place today.

They can differentiate between two stages in the history of their company: In the first, from 1984 to 1995, Mango gradually gained a greater knowledge of the business and consolidated the product and store concept, and implemented the Just in Time philosophy in the distribution area, obtaining a certain critical mass on the Spanish market.

In the second stage – from 1996 to the present, they have reinforced the values of the team and increased their investment in a new concept of complete logistics based on speed, information, and technology. Background Of River Island

Set up in 1948 by Andrew Hunt and Bernard Lewis, it originally operated from a small shop in London as Lewis Separates. It has since gone through a number of name changes – Chelsea Girl, Concept Man – before becoming River Island in 1988. The group is a family concern, led by entrepreneur and chairman Bernard Lewis. Its collections are designed by an in-house team and it has more than 250 UK stores.

Women’s and teenage fashions, menswear, and a fast-expanding children’s clothing range, although not in this store. Featured here is its retro 1970s- and 1960s-style Chelsea Girl range aimed at slightly younger customers, which is slightly cheaper than the River Island ranges. On the top floor are accessories and a small amount of makeup and shoes, while menswear is relegated to the basement.
